There is no Zapad-2026. The "Zapad" strategic exercises, run jointly by Russia and Belarus, are quadrennial: the last was Zapad-2025, held 12–16 September 2025, and the next is expected around 2029. No Zapad-2026 has been announced, and none is running in autumn 2026.
What the digests reported, and the correction
Between 2 and 10 August 2026 this monitor's own daily issues treated an approaching "Zapad-2026" as real — a Russian-Belarusian exercise with an active phase around mid-September and, per intelligence estimates cited in connection with Lithuania's Chief of Defence Gen. Raimundas Vaikšnoras, up to ~30,000 troops, with movements possible from August to October. Whose intelligence service produced that estimate was never stated. The premise itself traced to Lithuanian readiness reporting, in which Gen. Vaikšnoras declared August and September months of heightened readiness "in connection with the Russian-Belarusian 'Zapad-2026' exercise".
The issue of 11 August published a correction. It called the approaching Zapad-2026 a false premise and a "phantom driver", removed the reference and re-derived that day's risk score without it, setting out the cadence instead: Zapad is quadrennial, the last was 12–16 September 2025, the next is expected around 2029. The correction is recorded in this site's public corrections log. Reviews on 12, 13 and 14 August found no new errors and upheld the removal. From 26 August onward the standing line has been that no major Russian-Belarusian exercise is announced for autumn 2026 — an absence the digests score as a down-factor. On 1 September, material circulating with "~40,000 troops amid Russo-Belarusian manoeuvres" was date-checked and found to describe September 2025.
What is actually happening in autumn 2026
The large exercise under way is Latvian, not Russian: Namejs 2026, nationwide from 2 September to 8 October with ~12,000 troops and Zemessardze members. Near the Belarus border, Lithuania's Strong Griffin 2026 runs 2–20 September with ~2,500 troops and ~500 pieces of equipment and a drone focus; the digests note that its initial dissemination ran partly via Russian and Belarusian outlets and present it without categoricalness. Poland introduces an airspace-restriction regime from 10 September. On the Russian side the only dated event is Western Military District command-and-staff drills at the Pravdinsky range, Kaliningrad Region, on 24–28 August — over 2,500 troops with live fire, announced by a single departmental source (the Baltic Fleet press service via TASS) and never independently confirmed.
