Indestructible Brotherhood-2026 and Barrier-2026: CSTO drills in Vitebsk
Indestructible Brotherhood-2026 is a command-and-staff exercise of the CSTO peacekeeping forces. Alongside it runs Barrier-2026, a special exercise of the joint radiological, chemical and biological defence and medical formation. The opening ceremony was held on 11 October 2026 on Victory Square in Vitebsk. Belarusian state television CTV dates the practical phase to 12–16 October. The texts read do not place the drills on the border with Poland or Lithuania and do not name the Suwałki Gap.
Key facts
- Dates: ceremony on 11 October 2026 in Vitebsk (the CSTO site and CTV, both of 11.10). CTV writes that the practical phase starts on 12 October and runs through the 16th. The CSTO page speaks of the ranges in the present tense on the day of the ceremony. That is a discrepancy about the day of the field phase, not two exercises.
- Scale: more than 1,500 troops, more than 300 pieces of weapons and equipment, about 80 UAVs. The figure is the same at the press centre and at CTV. There is no independent recount. About 40 pieces of equipment in the 9 October note belonged to the Russian contingent, not to this overall figure.
- Participants: Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan. The press centre adds interior-ministry, police and national-guard units, plus operational groups of the CSTO Joint Staff and Secretariat. The Russian core is units of a combined-arms army of the Central Military District, not the Baltic Fleet.
- Place: the Losvido range is the peacekeeping operation; the Starodorozhsky range is the elimination of sources of biological threats. Both names are on the CSTO page. CTV names Losvido and the content of Barrier, but the text read does not repeat the name of the second range. Neither text places the ranges on the Polish or Lithuanian border.
- Run by: the CSTO. The ceremony names Major General Vladimir Bely, chief of the Belarusian General Staff, and Lieutenant General Ruslan Shpekbaev, deputy chief of the CSTO Joint Staff. How often the drills are held is not confirmed by a separate formula in this window's texts; CTV calls them planned and not directed at third countries.
What is being practised
Preparing and conducting a peacekeeping operation with the collective peacekeeping forces, commanders' skills in controlling contingents, and eliminating sources of biological threats in the zone of responsibility of those forces. Shpekbaev on the CSTO page says separately that the action draws in more than military formations.
How it started
- 7–9 October — background from earlier issues: regrouping into Belarus and a report that the Russian contingent had arrived. That note had no overall headcount and did not name the ranges.
- 11.10 — ceremony on Victory Square in Vitebsk. The press centre publishes the overall figure and the names of the ranges. CTV dates the practical phase to 12–16 October.
- 12.10 — the first day of the practical window CTV named. No separate morning report with a new headcount had been read when the 12 October issue closed.
What this means for the Baltics
The drills are in Belarus, but not on the land bridge between Kaliningrad and Belarus. Vitebsk lies in the north-east of the country; the pages read do not say that the Losvido range has been pushed to the Latvian border. For the daily assessment this is a factor announced in advance, not a new move to the NATO border. The Russian core is assigned to the Central Military District, not to Kaliningrad.
